March 8

Friends in Christ, it’s that time of year we’ve all been waiting for as we advance our clocks one hour on Sunday morning at 2:00 am and return to Daylight Savings Time DST! (I’m not smiling)

As we adjust to the time change on Sunday morning, we will welcome the Rev. Evalyn Wakhusama to the Sea Island pulpit to share the morning message, “Called to a Life of Encounter,” based on Genesis 12:1-4 and Romans 4:1-5, 13-17. “Evalyn” will also provide an update on her work with the Nambale Magnet School, Kenya. We are grateful for Cary and Eve Tolley facilitating “Evalyn’s” second visit as Sea Island’s partnership with NBS continues to grow and develop.

Easter Candy: With our children looking forward to the annual Easter Egg Hunt in the church courtyard following the mid-morning Easter service, the Christian education committee is collecting candy donations. Donations can be placed in the designated basket located in the narthex or dropped off at the front desk during regular operating hours. Monday thru Friday.

Meeting of the Moms: Mothers of the youth and children of the church please join us on March 22nd from 5-6:30 in room 208 to discuss different ways that we can connect and support each other through our journey of motherhood and our walk with Christ. If you are able to attend please RSVP to Emily at emily@seaisland.millerdandm.com

One week away from the start of the annual Men’s Retreat on Pair a Dice Island, we pray that those who are able to make the retreat will enjoy making new friends and renewing long-standing friendships in the understanding that fellowship with Christ and with others strengthens our faith to represent Jesus and his message of the gospel in the world around us with a sense of joy and peace. Peace and Grace +

February 27

Sisters and Brothers in Christ, as we prepare to break bread and share the cup Sunday morning as a church family and community of faith, I believe the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer hold special meaning in a day and age where some people overlook the value of Christian fellowship.

“It is by the grace of God,” Bonhoeffer wrote, “that a congregation is permitted to gather visibly in this world to share God’s Word and Sacrament. Not all Christians receive this blessing. The imprisoned, the sick, the scattered lonely, the proclaimers of the Gospel in heathen lands stand alone. They know that visible fellowship is a blessing.”

Opportunities to enjoy the blessing of visible fellowship include the Men’s Breakfast beginning Saturday morning at 8:00 am; followed by the Thursday, 12 Noon Men’s Bible study, Room 208, in the book of Romans.

In two weeks our men of the church will come together like the disciples did on the Sea of Galilee by getting into boats at Russ Point Landing and motor boat to Pair a’ Dice Island for the annual Men’s Retreat, March 13, 14 and 15. POC: Barry Reynolds barryreynolds420@gmail.com and Mike Yoakum at mikeyoakum.29920@gmail.com.

Confirmands will gather for another session of their Confirmation/Catechism Class in Room 206 following Sunday’s 10:30 am worship service with our children and youth coming together for fellowship Sunday afternoon at 5:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall and Christian education wing.

The Lady’s Lunch Bunch is looking forward to getting together at 11:30 am, Tuesday morning at Poncho’s Tacos & Beer, 2121 Boundary Street, Suite 103 (the old K-Mart Shopping Center). This is a good time for making new friends, enjoying good food and visiting with one another in a warm and gracious atmosphere.

Wednesday Wee Kirk begins with a 5:30 supper and the singing of hymns in the Fellowship Hall. Afterwards, we break up into small groups where we continue a lenten journey with some of the great hymns of the church as the lyrics we sing offer strong affirmations of faith. The food is great, the singing is inspiring and the small groups, warm and inviting and very engaging.

As we close out next week, a Committal Service for Herb and Marge Jarvis is scheduled for Friday, 11:00 am, in the church’s Memorial Garden & Columbarium. As we thank God for the friendship and lives of Herb and Marge, we will also celebrate the Christian hope of the resurrection.

On this Friday afternoon, dancing between raindrops, may we hold tight to the conviction that wherever we may be, we are held together solely in Jesus Christ. May the Lord bless and keep you. +

February 20

With the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany behind us, we now move into the season of Lent, a 40 day period where we follow Jesus into the wilderness and as he was tempted, it is of spiritual importance that we acknowledge our own personal temptations and do our best, in the name of Christ, to resist and overcome them.

May the wisdom of the Psalmist be a blessing to you, your loved ones, and friends, “Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice!” (Psalm 32) Peace and Grace +

Blue Shirt Sunday – First Sunday in Lent

The first Sunday of Lent throughout the Presbyterian Church (USA) is designated “Wear your blue t-shirt (or something blue) as a testament of the ways the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering on Easter morning makes a difference. King David sang, “You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.” (Psalm 30) Thousands of volunteers give expression to the words “Out of Chaos, Hope.” Many disaster survivors who see the love of God evident in the lives of these servants are able to take off their cloak of mourning and begin to find joy. We give thanks to God for Mark McCain and Jeneane Ryan who currently serve on PDA Response Teams.

Wee Kirk Night – Wednesday

We will begin our time together at 5:30 in the Fellowship Hall with a nice supper, the singing of two hymns, Evening Prayer and then move to two small groups where we will look at and reflect on the various hymns of Lent and explore the themes of forgiveness, vision, Holy Week and Easter. +

Scotland Here We Come

Our Scotland pilgrims should have their passports in hand and secure their Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for the United Kingdom. Please reach out to Kay Keeler 843.812.4206 if you have questions or need help. Some of the highlights of the trip include visiting the home of John Knox on the Royal Mile, joining the congregation of the St. Giles Cathedral for Sunday morning worship, visiting the Culloden Battlefield near Inverness, St. Andrews on the coast, the Isle of Skye, and the Isle and Abbey of Iona. We begin our journey flying out of the Charleston International Airport on May 30.

Ordination & Installation of Church Officers

Following a tradition and religious rite established in the early church, today is a special day in the life of our congregation as we receive a new group of church officers. As they prepare to lead us in the way of Jesus Christ, we promise to pray for them, to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ, who alone is the Head of the Church.

“My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.” (Psalm 145.21)

A Prayer for the beginning of Lent

“Lent is a time to be with you, Lord, in a special way, a time to pray, to fast, and to follow you on our way to Jerusalem, to Golgotha, and to the final victory over death. I am still so divided, I truly want to follow you, but I also want to follow my own desires and lend an ear to the voices that speak about prestige, success, pleasure, power and influence. Help me to become deaf to these voices and more attentive to your voice, which calls me to choose the narrow road to live.

Please, Lord, be with me every moment and in every place. Give me the strength and the courage to live this Lenten season faithfully, so that when Easter comes, I will be able to taste with joy the new life that you have prepared for me. Amen.” (from Henri Nouwen)

Our time together is devoted to considering ways we can apply the teachings of Jesus in daily life, moving beyond mere belief to demonstrating faith through actions like compassion, service, ethical conduct in work and family, and personal transformation, focusing on loving God and neighbor in tangible ways, from prayer to serving the needy and showing forgiveness. Through our study and conversation, we learn that faith should be visible in all aspects of life, not just private moments, transforming how we interact with the world around us.
